Goa for kids: So what? Everyone's doing it...

Image
Alisha Fernandes, TNN | May 29, 2013, 01.17 AM IST When children step outside their cozy and protected world of home, they often develop a sense of conflict on whether to adhere to deeply-instilled family values or succumb to the temptation of what their peers ask of them. In most cases, the idea that 'everyone's doing it' is enough to influence the child, say experts. Sometimes to appear 'cool' and be accepted among peers, children tend to adopt habits like shoplifting, smoking and drinking, among other things. The demand to match peer 'standards' can be stressful and confusing. In some cases, children are able to cope with the new challenges, while in others ill habits may falsely seem like a route to boost self-esteem. Sixteen-year-old  Sherel Almedia  (name changed) recollects a visit to a superstore with friends as a young child when she was forced to shoplift to 'prove herself' to her peers. "I was 10 years old, my friend t

My heart beats just for you

Image
As every moment passes by, The memories of the past, act as a flashback, It takes me back in time, when we were together…………… When you were the reason for me to smile, When you were always there for me, in times of my sadness, We fought, we got upset; but things soon turned to be pretty well between us…. Distance is a factor; we both are worried at the moment, But as many people say, “Distance is the true test of love” Soon we’ll make it through all the odds, As This heart beats just for you…………  <3 <3 <3

NOW I’m left with absolutely nothing………………………………

Image
Life gives everyone an equal opportunity, if I’m sad now, there will be a time when I’ll be happy… It’s very strange, Life keep playing games, Once you feel you are blessed, The other moment makes you realise, how badly have you been abandoned… My heart is a love seeker, Soo wherever I go, I feel people are really affectionate, But no, this is the second time now, I have been proved wrong. The amount of love and respect, I gave them Just made me realise, they were never worth of sooo much adoring that I kept giving them Anyways, Life still moves on, I’m back to square one…………. Love, care, trust, faith, are just few words in the dictionary…. In return of soo much, NOW I’m left with absolutely nothing………………………………

The Beautiful Parks in the Panaji City

Image
Since summer holidays are on the block, a large number of children like spending their time playing, learning new games, and making new friends in public parks. And with the introduction of good amenities and better maintenance facilities, the park culture has been revived. The capital city consists of two major parks Campal, while the other is Caranzalem. Both the parks have a sea side view, which gives it an even more beautiful look. The Campal Park is a very famous children park, in Panaji. The specialty of this park is that it’s one of the well known picnic spots and the uniqueness about this park is that it offers the facility of boat ride. Everyday this park is visited by a huge number of locals. Agnelo Rosario, 35, from Vasco, who came to this park with his 5 year old daughter, said “It’s been a really long time, since I last visited this place. And as compared to its first appearance, I feel it’s very much well maintained now. It’s quite neat and clean. And I feel i

Students travelling far distant places for studying....

Image
As there are only a few colleges in the state that offer career oriented courses. A large number of students are ready to travel long distances, sometimes even more than 40 km a day. A career oriented course provides the students, an edge over the others. Sometimes students are also ready to stay far away from home, while there are many who travel regularly to long distant places. Despite the various hardships in the infuriating long journey, students are yet firm towards achieving a degree in these courses. Felicia Gomes, 18, whose studying mass media at Don Bosco Panjim travels all the way from Carmona said “I always wanted to study mass media but since I stay in a village such courses aren’t available in this area. No matter what, I wanted to pursue this course that’s the reason I don’t mind travelling so much. As this area, have only a few buses. I often face the problem of being stuffed between so many people in an over – crowded bus. I just want more regular buses in

Mapusa Sub yard in bad state

Image
With the introduction of the Mapusa Municipal market, the needs of Mapusa sub yard have been neglected over the years.  The Mapusa sub yard was built 28 years ago. Presently, the shops here have developed huge cracks. The condition is so worse that these buildings can collapse anytime, if no serious action is taken. Huge pieces of the ceiling have already started peeling off causing threat to both the vendors as well as the customers. The Mapusa sub yard is one of the biggest market yards in the state where more than 130 vendors carry out trade on a daily basis. Speaking to one of the senior shopkeeper, Ullas Narvekar, 60, said “Now it’s almost more than 30 years. I have been selling fruits and vegetables here, but till now there’s no proper improvement measured. The main problem over here is the road access. Our trucks are stopped at the highway as there’s a lot of traffic congestion and that leads to delay in supply of goods in this area.” “In the next few years, ou

Bus rides

Image
I kept hearing from my friends that bus rides are terrible, but I never quite experienced it. I don’t really have to travel in the bus to the college, as my house is at a walking distance, from college But ever since I began my internship, it gave me the most pristine opportunity to travel in the buses. And the things that my friends found annoying, for me they seem to be the most interesting thing about the ride. Travelling in the buses gives one an exposure to almost all the different kinds of people. It helps one to observe people’s behavior and understand about their approach towards a particular issue; however this can be only done if you have very catchy and sharp eyes to observe almost everything around you.  I do agree travelling in the bus can get annoying when the conductors keep stuffing the passengers in the bus as if they are lining up sardines in a basket. But this also teaches one, a lot of things like nothing comes easily to you, unless or until you have pa

Mother’s Day Special

Image
Motherhood -- an opportunity to see your heart walk outside your body. Today, the entire country celebrates mother’s day. A day dedicated to motherhood, a day dedicated to the maternal bonds filled with unconditional love and understanding . A mother understands her child, even before the child learns to speak or mummers. Speaking to a few mothers, they described the true experience of motherhood as a maternal bond that teaches a woman a lot more things like patience, caring, nurturing and even the joy of giving. And hence this day is indeed, a day of celebration of a mother who over the years have shaped and helped the blooming of human life. Reema Casseres, from Kuwait, a mother of an infant said, “A women would truly understand motherhood only when one becomes a mother herself. Life completely changes, there’s no longer a word called “me” in the picture but “us” the mother and child. It’s one of the best things that could ever happen to a woman. When we do things f

Fountainhas – The True Goan Heritage

Image
Situated in the heart of Panjim, Fountainhas is a place which is still unknown to many people. Fountainhas is a small town, which was constructed about 300 years ago, it is a place where one can discover Goa and it’s true heritage during the Portuguese era. The infrastructure, the building, the houses take you back in time, where Portuguese ruled Goa. “Fount Phix” is a fountain present in this town, and it was also because of this fountain that the town got it’s name “Fountainhas.”   The fountain, “Fount Phix” also served as the only source of fresh water for the people leaving in this area. The main places are Mala and Fountainhas. Mala had a more of Hindu population while Fountainhas had more of a catholic population. Fountainhas is one of those few places where one can actually get a feel of Goa during the Portuguese times. Initially a Chapel was built in Fountainhas, keeping in mind the needs of the Portuguese people. One of the most interesting aspect of this Chapel
