St. Sebastian Church

Image
Photographer : Alisha Fernandes Camera : Sony DSC –W120 St. Sebastian Church is one of the oldest churches in Goa. It’s of a Portuguese origin. The church is located in Fountainhas, Panjim which is the first place that you enter as soon you cross the Bus stand bridge. (Just four- five minutes walking distance) The church is of a Portuguese origin and it’s the only church which still recites Portuguese Mass. The feast of St. Sebastian, the Patron of the place is celebrated with great pomp and glory. It just gives you, a carnival feel. With the people coming on the streets, singing, dancing and exchanging greetings.   In case you’re planning to go there in the afternoons then please do carry all your eatables and lots and lots of water. As you wouldn’t find any shop open of there. And I’m saying this out of personal experience, as I and my friend were roaming about like thirsty crows, hoping to get a drop of water but didn’t unless we reached the bus stand. But still th

Regardless of your education, talent or training becoming a successful businesswoman heavily depends on how well you work with others. As the saying goes, “She who would lead, must first be willing to serve.” No matter the commodity, all businesses are ultimately based on the art of dealing with people. Even if you’re the best at what you do, you can’t be a successful businesswoman if no one wants to deal with you. The mantra is let your unique, fabulous self be your advantage and well Asha Arondekar a well known Goan Businesswoman and socialite knows this well. Belonging to a family serving the Indian Navy, her upbringing was in a complete disciplined environment which indeed contributed greatly to her values and in becoming what she is today. Born in Goa, she completed her education from Pune University and holds a Masters degree in Bio- Chemistry. “I remember it was in Pune w

My classmate, Master Jovel Fernandes was the one who voluntarily came forward to become this prominent personality. And I must say he did a pretty amazing job.  A very big Thank you, to Jovel for being so patient. You posed truly amazingly. Thanks!! Cheers!!

Textured Stone ..

Image
Photo Credits : Alisha Fernandes Camera: Sony DSC-W120 I was just moving around in my building garden, when I seen this beautiful stone - with various textures. And this made me think that our life too has various textures.. And every texture (feeling or emotion) has nothing negative in it. Everything teaches us someething or the other in life. What is important is, how we take it on and bring about a change!!

The beautiful endless road at Parra

Image
Photo Credits: Alisha Fernandes Camera: Sony DSC- W12 It was a during the monsoon season when I was passing through Parra. That day seem to be quite dull day in as the Sun refused to come out completely and shine upon. However, there were a few rays that somehow managed to come out of the clouds and rest upon this road.  What caught my attention here!! Was the shadow of the tree, that just fell on this beautiful endless road, making it an amazing setting. And what added more to the beauty of this picture is the lush green fields of Parra.

Daddy…

Image
People say, a daughter is always close to her father. Well, in my case too this is very true. My daddy is the best father, an ever smiling person; a person can lighten up the moment by cracking a joke. Daddy, you’re very special, you have been there like a stronger pillar, guiding me and saving me through all the fury of life. You have given, almost your entire life to work abroad so that I don’t have any problem in life. As a young daughter, I remember that I kept getting angry on you as you never attended most of my birthdays, it was only now that I realized, more than me you were very sad as you could make it.   But still since you weren’t here you always made it a point to send me a card through post and call me up. Seriously, having a father like you is like a dream come true. You have always been there, supporting me in almost everything I wanted to do in life, be it with regard to travelling alone outside Goa or be it with regard to my career. You were always there

Hong Kong Disneyland --- Live it, Love it

Image
Yes, Live it, Love it. That’s the motto, which is used by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, to promote tourism in their country. Earlier, this place was just known as a simple fishing village but today it’s counted as one of the leading cosmopolitan cities in the world, harboring roughly over 7 million people. Since 1 st July 1997, Hong Kong is the special administrative region of China. It is still a place where ancient traditions are thrived with ultra modern cultural ethics. It has busy market streets to modern skyscrapers and historic heritage. The most famous and popular tourist attraction is the Hong Kong Disneyland. A wondrous world of exciting and enchanting Disney characters, where once a upon a time was now. The thrill of imaginary characters coming into reality and a place where 3D films are portrayed the best. The place where one can create amazing memories, that’s surely going to last forever. The Disneyland is divided into Four Sections: Main Street, U.S.A; Fantasy

Say no to violence against Women and Girl Child….

Image
We live in the 21 st century; despite the fact that we live in a multiethnic democracy; our country still faces a lot of problems which cannot be solved till now. A flip side to the coin would help us to realize that it is this very country which has recorded a large number of cases of rapes, murder for dowry and sexual assault against women, this year. Why is this happening? Where are we heading? Everyday there are more than two sexual assault, rape or murder cases against women registered in the country. Is this because we live in a male dominant country? Its quiet disheartening despite the frequent attempts, one cannot put an end to such crimes. Though, after the Delhi gang rape, the country came together and decided to put an end to such crimes but no just few days after this case another rape case was witnessed again in the capital of the country. Ofcourse, it is disheartening to hear such things on television and read on newspaper. I was reading a few allegations ma

Goa for kids: So what? Everyone's doing it...

Image
Alisha Fernandes, TNN | May 29, 2013, 01.17 AM IST When children step outside their cozy and protected world of home, they often develop a sense of conflict on whether to adhere to deeply-instilled family values or succumb to the temptation of what their peers ask of them. In most cases, the idea that 'everyone's doing it' is enough to influence the child, say experts. Sometimes to appear 'cool' and be accepted among peers, children tend to adopt habits like shoplifting, smoking and drinking, among other things. The demand to match peer 'standards' can be stressful and confusing. In some cases, children are able to cope with the new challenges, while in others ill habits may falsely seem like a route to boost self-esteem. Sixteen-year-old  Sherel Almedia  (name changed) recollects a visit to a superstore with friends as a young child when she was forced to shoplift to 'prove herself' to her peers. "I was 10 years old, my friend t

My heart beats just for you

Image
As every moment passes by, The memories of the past, act as a flashback, It takes me back in time, when we were together…………… When you were the reason for me to smile, When you were always there for me, in times of my sadness, We fought, we got upset; but things soon turned to be pretty well between us…. Distance is a factor; we both are worried at the moment, But as many people say, “Distance is the true test of love” Soon we’ll make it through all the odds, As This heart beats just for you…………  <3 <3 <3

NOW I’m left with absolutely nothing………………………………

Image
Life gives everyone an equal opportunity, if I’m sad now, there will be a time when I’ll be happy… It’s very strange, Life keep playing games, Once you feel you are blessed, The other moment makes you realise, how badly have you been abandoned… My heart is a love seeker, Soo wherever I go, I feel people are really affectionate, But no, this is the second time now, I have been proved wrong. The amount of love and respect, I gave them Just made me realise, they were never worth of sooo much adoring that I kept giving them Anyways, Life still moves on, I’m back to square one…………. Love, care, trust, faith, are just few words in the dictionary…. In return of soo much, NOW I’m left with absolutely nothing………………………………

The Beautiful Parks in the Panaji City

Image
Since summer holidays are on the block, a large number of children like spending their time playing, learning new games, and making new friends in public parks. And with the introduction of good amenities and better maintenance facilities, the park culture has been revived. The capital city consists of two major parks Campal, while the other is Caranzalem. Both the parks have a sea side view, which gives it an even more beautiful look. The Campal Park is a very famous children park, in Panaji. The specialty of this park is that it’s one of the well known picnic spots and the uniqueness about this park is that it offers the facility of boat ride. Everyday this park is visited by a huge number of locals. Agnelo Rosario, 35, from Vasco, who came to this park with his 5 year old daughter, said “It’s been a really long time, since I last visited this place. And as compared to its first appearance, I feel it’s very much well maintained now. It’s quite neat and clean. And I feel i

Students travelling far distant places for studying....

Image
As there are only a few colleges in the state that offer career oriented courses. A large number of students are ready to travel long distances, sometimes even more than 40 km a day. A career oriented course provides the students, an edge over the others. Sometimes students are also ready to stay far away from home, while there are many who travel regularly to long distant places. Despite the various hardships in the infuriating long journey, students are yet firm towards achieving a degree in these courses. Felicia Gomes, 18, whose studying mass media at Don Bosco Panjim travels all the way from Carmona said “I always wanted to study mass media but since I stay in a village such courses aren’t available in this area. No matter what, I wanted to pursue this course that’s the reason I don’t mind travelling so much. As this area, have only a few buses. I often face the problem of being stuffed between so many people in an over – crowded bus. I just want more regular buses in

Mapusa Sub yard in bad state

Image
With the introduction of the Mapusa Municipal market, the needs of Mapusa sub yard have been neglected over the years.  The Mapusa sub yard was built 28 years ago. Presently, the shops here have developed huge cracks. The condition is so worse that these buildings can collapse anytime, if no serious action is taken. Huge pieces of the ceiling have already started peeling off causing threat to both the vendors as well as the customers. The Mapusa sub yard is one of the biggest market yards in the state where more than 130 vendors carry out trade on a daily basis. Speaking to one of the senior shopkeeper, Ullas Narvekar, 60, said “Now it’s almost more than 30 years. I have been selling fruits and vegetables here, but till now there’s no proper improvement measured. The main problem over here is the road access. Our trucks are stopped at the highway as there’s a lot of traffic congestion and that leads to delay in supply of goods in this area.” “In the next few years, ou

Bus rides

Image
I kept hearing from my friends that bus rides are terrible, but I never quite experienced it. I don’t really have to travel in the bus to the college, as my house is at a walking distance, from college But ever since I began my internship, it gave me the most pristine opportunity to travel in the buses. And the things that my friends found annoying, for me they seem to be the most interesting thing about the ride. Travelling in the buses gives one an exposure to almost all the different kinds of people. It helps one to observe people’s behavior and understand about their approach towards a particular issue; however this can be only done if you have very catchy and sharp eyes to observe almost everything around you.  I do agree travelling in the bus can get annoying when the conductors keep stuffing the passengers in the bus as if they are lining up sardines in a basket. But this also teaches one, a lot of things like nothing comes easily to you, unless or until you have pa

Mother’s Day Special

Image
Motherhood -- an opportunity to see your heart walk outside your body. Today, the entire country celebrates mother’s day. A day dedicated to motherhood, a day dedicated to the maternal bonds filled with unconditional love and understanding . A mother understands her child, even before the child learns to speak or mummers. Speaking to a few mothers, they described the true experience of motherhood as a maternal bond that teaches a woman a lot more things like patience, caring, nurturing and even the joy of giving. And hence this day is indeed, a day of celebration of a mother who over the years have shaped and helped the blooming of human life. Reema Casseres, from Kuwait, a mother of an infant said, “A women would truly understand motherhood only when one becomes a mother herself. Life completely changes, there’s no longer a word called “me” in the picture but “us” the mother and child. It’s one of the best things that could ever happen to a woman. When we do things f
